Macaw Clay Lick & Sandoval Lake 4 Days / 3 Nights
Day 1: Begin Your Amazon Adventure
Arrival at the airport or bus station and transfer to the office of Monte Amazonico Lodge for final arrangements about the tour before departing on your adventure. For those with large luggage, we suggest repacking to store unnecessary items and carry just enough for the trip.
A land transfer via 4x4 wheeled truck to our destination takes about 2 hours to reach the banks of the Tambopata River (by river it will take more than 6 hours). From here, we will take a boat to the lodge "Monte Amazonico - Tambopata." Welcome and breakfast or lunch will be provided depending on arrival time.
In the afternoon, we make an introductory walk into the rainforest where we will have the opportunity to see animals in their natural habitat such as amphibians, mammals, reptiles and wonderful insects, among others.
Day 2: El Chuncho Clay Lick and Monkey Island
We wake up early at 4:30 am to visit the world's largest macaw clay lick, El Chuncho, a journey of about 1:30 hours by boat. Along the way, we will have the opportunity to see species such as capybaras, tapirs, and possibly even the jaguar - many of our clients have photographic evidence of encounters with these magnificent animals.
At the clay lick, you will witness hundreds of different parrot species gathering to eat clay from the river wall. We will settle in our chairs to observe one of the most beautiful natural sights in the world. Parrots are followed by three species of the most colorful macaws of America, gathering to eat clay needed for their daily diet and to eliminate toxins. On a good day, you will see hundreds of these wonderful animals flying overhead.
After breakfast, we return to Puerto Maldonado and transfer to our lodge, welcomed with refreshing regional fruit juice. After lunch, we visit "Monkey Island", located across the Madre de Dios River from our lodge, home to different species including brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, and saddle back tamarin. In the evening, we search for caimans - white alligators typically found on the river's sand banks. We may also spot some capybaras before returning to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 3: Lake Sandoval Exploration
After breakfast, we embark on a 3 km walk through dense rainforest to Lake Sandoval, known for its piranha population and as one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. We'll explore by rowing boat, observing various bird species (shansho, cormorant, jacanas, puma heron, buzzards) and other wildlife including howler monkeys, brown capuchin monkeys, tamarins, and sloths. We may encounter the endangered family of giant river otters, which can reach almost two meters in length.
After returning to the lodge for a typical lunch, we'll have another opportunity in the evening to walk and observe various species of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals, followed by dinner and rest.
Day 4: Canopy Walk and Departure
At 5:30 a.m., we take a short walk to our canopy walkway, suspended about 30 meters high, allowing us to appreciate nature from above and enjoy a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. From the platforms, we'll observe different bird species, including toucans, macaws, tanagers, and orioles - a truly wonderful experience.
After breakfast, we return to the city for airport or bus station transfers.
